Sunday 14th August 2005 Bay beat Clara Vale to win Planet Trophies Cup
Whitley Bay v Clara Vale Second Team Planet Trophies Cup Final 14th August 2005
On a overcast day in Alnmouth skipper Flanagan lost the toss but was pleased to
be bowling first on a pitch that was still wet from the previous days downpour.
The Alnmouth ground was an ideal setting for the final and the ground staff had
done very well to get the game played. The usual opening bowlers Wrigley and
Flanagan were ready and the team were hoping to repeat their excellent fielding
performance from the semi final. Wriggers opened the bowling and soon had one of
the openers caught by Graham Ord at point. Flan then bowled his usual line and
length keeping the runs down and increasing pressure on the batsmen. Some
accurate overs followed before Wriggers got the dangerous Sanderson out caught
at mid off by Mark Reid. Next ball another wicket was taken this time an
excellent catch by wicket keeper Fred Wiles. Unfortunately the hatrick was not
forth coming but Clara were in trouble at 20-3. The experienced pair of Young
and Philpott were at the crease and needed to rebuild the Clara innings.
Flanagan joined the party having the Australian Philpott excellently caught by
Colin Girdlestone for 21 who later ran out one of the tail enders. The fielding
was superb not only holding onto catches but many runs were saved by the teams
agility. Flan then took another wicket with the help of Birdy at mid on, this
was the first of his 3 catches. Once the openers had completed their 10 overs
the change bowlers Thomas and Kenny kept up the good work. Wriggers finished
with 3-23 and Flanagan 2-20. Thomas was bowling a good pace which was causing
the batsmen to play and miss a lot, Clara were 65-6 after 23 overs. Thomas took
the first of his 3 wickets courtesy of a great catch at point from Ord. The Bays
strangehold on the game continued until some hitting from Routledge added some
much needed runs to their total. The innings ended with a couple of run outs
with Clara making 115 from 40 overs, Thomas finished with 3-23 and Kenny 1-25.
Clara opening their bowling with ex Bay player Mark Newton who bowled a good
line to the openers Slaven and Bird. Bird hit 10 off Arbonots first over putting
the Bay firmly in control of the game. Slaven got off the mark with a 4 through
the slip cordon and more attacking shots from Bird advanced the score to 34
after 6 overs. He was then out edging a wide ball to second slip for a rapid 24.
Wriggers then batted well holding the innings together whilst other batsmen got
themselves out on a regular basis. Slaven was soon out for 12 then Ord played
some good shots but was out for 15 with the score on 62-3. Reid played well for
18 taking the score into the 80s before being another Bay batsmen caught going
for a big hit. Skipper Flanagan joined his vice captain in the middle and played
sensibly until Chris Wrigley played across the line and became the first batsmen
to be bowled out for 19 taking the score into the 90s. Flanagan and Kenny added
another 15 runs before Kenny was run out by a direct hit. Next in was Barry
Thomas as the game became more tense with 10 runs needed from 4 overs. The
pressure was mounting on both teams and a few wides helped the Bays total but
Flan was then caught for a valuable 15. Young Colin Girdlestone joined Thomas
with 5 needed for victory from 2 overs with 2 wickets remaining. Both youngsters
batted with maturity beyond their years seeing the Bay home in the last over. A
very close game which could have gone either way was won and kept up the clubs
record on never losing a Second team final. The presentation to evergreen
skipper Flanagan was made by League Representative Geoff Goldie who complimented
both teams and umpires for a tremendous contest.
